چکیده
In a previous publication (Fraenkel & Blewett, 1943) it has been shown that a number of insects which normally live on wholemeal flour or other cereal products grow badly or not at all on flour thoroughly extracted with chloroform unless a sterol, e.g. cholesterol, is added to the diet. For several beetle larvae the diet becomes optimal upon addition of a pure sterol, but for the caterpillars of a moth, Ephestia kuehmella, wheat-germ oil has a much better effect than a sterol. Using artificial diets, consisting of glucose, casein, yeast and cholesterol, it was found that E. kuehmella grew well in the presence of wheat-germ oil and badly without it. Subsequently it emerged (Fraenkel & Blewett, 19466) that the closely related species E. elutella grew fairly well on similar diets in the absence of wheat-germ oil and pupated normally, but the adults invariably failed to emerge from the pupae. With wheat-germ oil, growth was fast and emergence normal. Analysis of the factors in wheat-germ oil which are required by the moths of the genus Ephestia is the subject of the present paper. Some of the results have already been shortly reported (Fraenkel & Blewett,

متن کاملCross-attraction of Five Species of Stored-product Phycitinae (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in a Wind Tunnel
Environ Entomol 15: 369-372 (1986) ABSTRACT Sharing of the sex-pheromone communication channel by five species of P ~ Y citine moths was measured in a wind tunnel Overall, male pheromonal response was characterized both by high levels of interspecific attraction and broad overlap in the circadian periods of male response, with attraction to nonconspecific females 75% of that to conspecifics, on...
متن کاملExpression of cry1Ab gene from a novel Bacillus thuringiensis strain SY49-1 active on pest insects
In this study, the cry1Ab gene of previously characterized and Lepidoptera-, Diptera-, and Coleoptera-active Bacillus thuringiensis SY49-1 strain was cloned, expressed and individually tested on Ephestia kuehniella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Plodia interpunctella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) larvae. pET-cry1Ab plasmids were constructed by ligating the cry1Ab into pET28a (+) expression vector. Con...
متن کاملInsecticidal Activity of the Essential Oils from Different Plants Against Three Stored-Product Insects
This study was conducted to determine the insecticidal activity of essential oils from oregano, Origanum onites L. (Lamiales: Lamiaceae), savory, Satureja thymbra L. (Lamiales: Lamiaceae), and myrtle, Myrtus communis L. (Rosales: Myrtaceae) against three stored-product insects. Essential oils from three species of plants were obtained by Clevenger-type water distillation. The major compounds in...
متن کاملInterspecific transfer of Wolbachia between two lepidopteran insects expressing cytoplasmic incompatibility: a Wolbachia variant naturally infecting Cadra cautella causes male killing in Ephestia kuehniella.
Wolbachia is known as the causative agent of various reproductive alterations in arthropods. The almond moth Cadra cautella is doubly infected with A- and B-group Wolbachia and expresses complete cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI). The Mediterranean flour moth Ephestia kuehniella carries A-group Wolbachia and expresses partial CI. In the present study, the Wolbachia in C. cautella was transferred...
